58. Write an essay on any one of the following topics : (5)
(c) Your Favourite Book
My Favourite Book: ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’
Among the countless books that have graced my bookshelf, my absolute favourite is ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This collection of short stories is not just a book; it is a gateway to a world of mystery, logic, and brilliant deduction that has captivated me since I first read it.
The central character, Sherlock Holmes, is what makes the book so extraordinary. He is not a typical hero; he is a “consulting detective” with a mind like a razor-sharp computer. His ability to observe the tiniest details and draw accurate conclusions from them is nothing short of genius. Through the eyes of his loyal friend, Dr. John Watson, we witness Holmes solving the most baffling cases, from a mysterious league of red-headed men to a royal scandal involving a photograph.
What I love most about the book is how it challenges the reader to think. Each story is a puzzle, and I find immense joy in trying to piece together the clues alongside Holmes. The foggy, gas-lit streets of Victorian London provide the perfect atmospheric backdrop for these thrilling mysteries. The book taught me the importance of observation, logical reasoning, and looking beyond the obvious. It is a timeless classic that I can read over and over again, always finding something new to admire.

Two cats steal a cake—they quarrel over their share—they ask a monkey for making two equal halves—the cats are deceived
The Cunning Monkey and the Foolish Cats
Once upon a time, two cats who were great friends stole a large piece of cake from a bakery. They took it to a quiet corner to share it. However, a problem arose. “I will take the bigger piece because I saw the cake first,” said one cat. “No! I should get the bigger piece because I was the one who snatched it,” argued the other. They began to quarrel fiercely over their shares.
A cunning monkey sitting on a nearby tree saw this as a golden opportunity. He came down and said, “My dear friends, why are you fighting? Let me help you divide the cake into two equal halves.” The foolish cats agreed. The monkey brought a weighing scale and broke the cake into two pieces. He placed one piece on each side of the scale. “Oh, this one is heavier,” he said, and took a large bite from the heavier piece.
Now, the other piece became heavier. So, he took a bite from that one. This went on, with the monkey taking bites from each piece, claiming he was trying to make them equal. The cats watched in dismay as their cake grew smaller and smaller. Finally, only two tiny crumbs were left. The monkey popped them into his mouth and said, “My fee for solving your dispute!” before scampering up the tree, leaving the two foolish cats with nothing.
59. Write a letter to the Editor of ‘The Assam Tribune’ regarding the waste of resources during the festivals. You are Radha/Rishav from Panbazar, Guwahati. (3)
To
The Editor
The Assam Tribune
Guwahati – 781003
Subject: Concern over wastage of resources during festivals
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the public and the concerned authorities towards the immense wastage of valuable resources during festivals in our city.
While festivals are a time for joy and celebration, they have unfortunately become synonymous with extravagance and waste. Precious resources like electricity are wasted on excessive decorative lighting that stays on all night. Huge amounts of food are prepared, and a significant portion often ends up in the garbage. Furthermore, the immersion of idols painted with toxic chemicals pollutes our rivers, and the bursting of firecrackers leads to severe air and noise pollution.
It is high time we embrace the concept of an eco-friendly celebration. We must celebrate responsibly by conserving electricity, avoiding food wastage, using natural materials for decorations, and opting for community fireworks to reduce pollution. I urge everyone to celebrate the spirit of our festivals without harming our environment.
Yours sincerely,
Rishav
