He puts Mijbil in a small box as instructed. However, Mijbil tears the box’s lining, injures itself, and escapes during the flight, causing chaos. A kind air hostess helps Maxwell recapture the otter.
In London, Mijbil adapts to his new surroundings. Maxwell takes him for walks on a lead, just like a dog. The otter develops “compulsive habits,” like touching every seventh iron railing. Londoners, unfamiliar with otters, make wild guesses about what kind of animal Mijbil is, calling him everything from a ‘baby seal’ to a ‘squirrel’ or even a ‘hippo’.
